With its historic buildings, baroque churches, port wine cellars and fantastic bridges, Porto’s old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Not too hot summers, a mild spring and a sunny autumn offer ideal conditions for wonderful day trips. Discover picturesque Guimaraes (the "birthplace of Portugal"), Braga (the "religious capital") and Aveiro (the "Portuguese Venice") on your excursions. You will cycle along the north and south coasts on well-developed independent bike paths right through the dunes always close to the beach and enjoy magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. And in addition: Pure bathing fun. In the evening, Porto offers a wide variety of options, from traditional pubs in the old town to small restaurants in the fishermen’s quarter to international restaurants on the picturesque waterfront.
Route
You cycle 90% on paved roads and only a few kilometers on gravel roads.
Individual arrival. Already on the first day you will have the opportunity to explore the city by bike and indulge in the special flair of this beautiful city.
This tour starts over the historic iron bridge and leads along the Douro to the river mouth in the Atlantic. On bike paths and boardwalks through dune landscapes, you will enjoy picturesque sandy coves and coastal towns. Beach cafes and bathing spots invite you to take breaks before you visit the biological station with its fishing museum and aquarium in Aguda. In Espinho, beautiful beaches, restaurants, bars and a casino await you. The route continues through coastal forests to Furadouro with its seafront promenade. From here you will reach Ovar train station, where the return trip to Porto awaits you. Alternatively, you can end the stage earlier and board the train at several coastal stations.
In the morning, take the train to Guimarães, Portugal’s first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the medieval town center with well-preserved town houses, palaces, cafes and attractions such as the city wall, the Palace of the Dukes, the Chapel of S. Miguel and the city castle. The cable car (including bicycle transport) takes you up to the 400-meter-high Penha mountain, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view. The bike tour leads downhill through eucalyptus forests and along flat paths through Vinho Verde vineyards to the thermal town of Vizela. From there, the train will take you comfortably back to Porto.
After a short train ride (30 min) to Valongo, your tour begins in the Serra de Valongo nature reserve. A quiet road leads through a densely wooded landscape along the wild and romantic Rio Ferreira. After 13 km, the river flows into the Rio Sousa, whose valley you follow to the Douro. Here, pleasure boats, rowing boats and charming riverside towns enliven the scenery. For the last 7 km, you cycle on a newly built riverside promenade directly to the old town of Porto – a real pleasure!
Today you will spend the day on the coast and cycle on well-developed bike paths along wide sandy beaches and dunes. Take the train to Póvoa de Varzim in the morning or get off earlier to flexibly adjust the length of your stage. Enjoy the 30 km long beaches and the charming coastal landscape. In the afternoon you will reach the Douro estuary and follow the shore back to the old town of Porto.
In the morning, take the train to Braga, Portugal’s oldest city and religious center. Visit the oldest cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and numerous churches before climbing the local mountain. After 100 meters of altitude, you will reach the impressive pilgrimage church of Bom Jesus do Monte. Continue through the park to the Sameiro pilgrimage church with a magnificent view. Afterwards, enjoy an 8 km descent back to Braga, from where you take the train back to Porto.
Take the train to Estarreja and cycle into the unique lagoon landscape with canals and bike paths. Explore this flat region by bike or canoe. Continue to the fishing town of Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal”, with picturesque canals, white salt mountains and colorful tangle fishing boats. Discover the Art Nouveau old town, the cathedral and enjoy the atmosphere in cafes or seafood restaurants. The return trip to Porto is easily done by train.
