Discover the scenic and cultural diversity of Moravia on a bike tour through the idyllic Morava Valley. This region in the heart of the Czech Republic boasts historic towns, magnificent castles, picturesque wine villages and impressive gardens. The well-marked “Moravska stezka” cycle path takes you through ancient riparian forests, past quiet fish ponds and romantic ship canals. Enjoy the perfect combination of nature, history and culinary delights that makes Moravia an insider tip for cycle tourists.
Route
Almost the entire route is flat bike paths. Some vineyards near Hodonin and Valtice, as well as the city center of Mikulov, which is also located on a hill. Up to 70% of the roads are paved and the remaining 30% are gravel roads.
Individual arrival. Overnight stay in a central location, ideal for a stroll through Krakow’s Old Town. Alternatively, the first night can also be booked in Vienna, or you can travel directly to Olomouc.
Transfer (from Krakow) or self-arrival (from Vienna) to Olomouc, where you will be picked up and your bike tour begins. Around noon you will reach Litovel, a small town with a well-known brewery, surrounded by the arms of the Morava. After lunch in an old mill, you will start the first bike tour through a nature reserve with protected alluvial forest. Soon the historic buildings of Olomouc come into view, the former capital of Moravia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its impressive monuments.
Olomouc impresses with the Holy Trinity Column, the town hall, the St. Wenceslas Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace. You cycle past the fortress walls along the Morava to Tovacov, which attracts visitors with its palace and Jewish Museum. The small town of Chropyne boasts a Renaissance hunting lodge. The stage ends in Kromeriz, the “Athens of Moravia”, known for its historic center, the Archbishop’s Palace and two magnificent parks.
The flat route follows the Bata Canal, a restored technical monument with old locks, houseboats and cafes. Architecture fans can visit Zlin, home of the Bata shoe company. The stage ends in Uherske Hradiste, a historic town with a picturesque center, a large market square and a remarkable neo-Romanesque synagogue.
You will cycle through the Moravian Slovakia, where the special folklore tradition is still alive. The region is known for its small white houses with blue shutters, wood carvings and ceramics. Vineyards, flowering meadows, castles and folk architecture can be enjoyed with a glass of excellent local wine. In Uhersky Ostro you can visit the historic city center, in Straznice the castle gardens and in Petrov the cellar lane. The overnight stay is planned in Hodonin.
Today you will cycle through vineyards to Breclav and further through wild alluvial forests to Lednice. There, a neo-Gothic castle and magnificent gardens await you in the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, known as the “Garden of Europe”. After a drive through parks with buildings such as a minaret and a triumphal arch, you will reach Valtice. Here you can enjoy the magnificent Liechtenstein Palace and Moravian wine in the wine salon.
The last stage leads through Mikulov. A baroque castle dominates this town and welcomes cyclists from afar due to its location on high cliffs. The historic center around the market square is home to richly decorated houses and an imposing tomb of the noble family of Dietrichstein. Then it’s back on a flat bike route. Just over the Austrian border, you will reach the last accommodation in Laa an der Thaya. Try out the thermal springs there!
Take the train to the city of waltz, Vienna (included). Explore the historic buildings of the city center, stroll along the Danube Island or enjoy a glass of wine in one of the famous Heurigen in the Viennese vineyards.
Individual departure on day 8. Alternatively, you can take the transfer back to Krakow from Laa or extend your stay in Laa.
