South Tyrol - Roundtrip

The treasure chest is open

Itinerary

Route

An easy tour for everyone! In the last few years, the bike paths in the valleys have been reconstructed and in some cases, newly built. Although South Tyrol is better known for its mountains you can also find easy bike paths in the valleys without great differences of altitude. This tour is suitable also for families with children (should have a good stamina) from the age of 14.

Individual arrival.

In the morning, the train takes you to Fortezza, the starting point for today's stage. You begin your journey through picturesque Alpine landscapes towards Brunico, the heart of the Val Pusteria region. The route continues to the foot of Plan de Corones, one of the most famous destinations for winter sports enthusiasts and hikers in summer. Along the way, you have the opportunity to visit San Lorenzo, a picturesque village with Roman roots, where you can discover traces of ancient history and enjoy the unique atmosphere. The route ends in Bressanone, where you can visit the historic center with its beautiful cathedral square.

Starting in Brixen, you follow the Eisack Valley bike path alongside the river Eisack and cycle through the many vineyards which mainly produce white wine, past the picturesque town of Klausen which is worth stopping to look at, and onto the capital town of Bolzano. Bolzano itself has much to offer, the arcades, the lawns by the river, a visit to the Ice Man in the Archaeological Museum or sitting and drinking a coffee in one of the many cafes in the town.

Tour in the wine growing areas around Lake Kaltern. Passing by Castle Sigmundskron, we first cycle to Eppan, the largest wine growing area in South Tyrol. Eppan has a superb compilation of innumerable castles; manor houses, churches and farms. After Eppan we carry on towards Kaltern. Those who want can take a detour at St. Michael to the idyllic Montiggler lakes and have a swim. The village of Kaltern is worth visiting, as well as the Wine Growing Museum. Just past Kaltern we arrive at the Lake Kaltern before we turn into the Etsch cycle path to return to Bolzano.

We leave Bolzano via Sigmundskron Castle and then follow the Wine Road through the orchards. The famous South Tyrolean apples come from this area. The oldest winery in South Tyrol which is situated in Andrian lies on the way. From here we carry on to Terlan, Nals and then to Lana, which is worth visiting, before arriving in the spa town of Meran. The Mediterranean climate, that Empress Sissi once favoured, will surprise you. Blossoming parks and promenades, exotic plants, picturesque arcades, and the many Art Nouveau buildings give the town its special charm and flair. While in Meran, don’t forget to visit the Botanical Gardens at Schloss Trauttmansdorff. Alternatively, you can ride directly to Merano via the Adige cycle path along the dam.

The new train takes you from Merano to Mals in the Vinschgau Valley. From here you can cycle through the whole valley towards Merano. The first stop is in Glurns, the smallest town in South Tyrol and we carry on through the orchards to Prad, Laas, Schlanders, Naturns and then back to Merano.

Transfer from Meran to the Jaufen Pass (2094 m above sea level) and then on to Sterzing. It is possible for those who choose to retrieve their bicycles on top of the Mountain Pass and cycle down to Sterzing through the countryside and enjoy the wonderful scenery. From Sterzing we cycle southwards along the cycle path through the Eisack Valley to the former customs checkpoint at Franzensfeste and further to Brixen.
