Highlights of the Dordogne

from/to Sarlat

Itinerary

Route

The Dordogne cycle paths are characterized by a varied landscape, with some hilly sections. There are some climbs, but they are usually short and not too steep. This makes the route well suited for recreational cyclists. The paths lead mainly over quiet side streets and small country lanes with little to no traffic.

Individual arrival in Sarlat. Take time to explore this small medieval town, which has been largely untouched by modern history. Sarlat has retained its original character and is a charming representation of 14th-century France.

The first day of cycling is all about the region’s cultural heritage. On the route you will find the village of Beynac with its imposing castle, the castle of Castelnaud, the gardens of Marqueyssac, the village of Roque Gageac, which seems to be glued to the rocky slopes of the Dordogne River, and much more. Take your pick and enjoy a culturally exciting day of cycling.

Today you will be heading towards Monpazier, a medieval town that has hardly changed over the last 700 years. The market square is often used as a film set for historical films and it is not without reason that Monpazier belongs to the organization of the “most beautiful villages in France”.

After about 15 km you will find yourself in the small village of St. Avit Seigneur with its impressive abbey. You then continue to Molières, a medieval fortress town that was never completed. The monastery in the village of Cadouin is also worth a stop and offers an opportunity for a lunch break. The final destination of Limeuil (also part of the most beautiful villages in France) can be reached after a ride through beautiful forests and along the Dordogne.

Along the Vézère, you will cycle to Le Bugue, a small, lively town on the river, before continuing to today’s destination. Les Eyziers de Tayac is also known as the center of the prehistoric attractions in the area and offers visitors an insight into the history of the region at the Musée National de Préhistoire. If you want to take a little detour, you can visit the village of La Madeleine on the other side of the Vézère.

Today offers you the opportunity to delve even further into the prehistoric times of the Dordogne region. From Les Eyzies de Tayac, you will cycle along the river via Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère to Montignac. The world-famous caves of Lascaux are always worth a visit, so plan the (comparatively short) bike ride accordingly.

Today you will return to Sarlat via small, typically French country roads. On the way, you will pass the impressive gardens of Château Eyrignac, which you should definitely visit. In the evening, explore the beautiful town of Sarlat once more and soak up its special atmosphere for the last time.

Individual departure or extension in Sarlat.

It is possible to add an extra day in Saint Vincent de Cosse to extend the trip with a canoe trip along the Dordogne. We also recommend an extra day in Monpazier to take a detour (about 40 km in total) to the beautiful castle of Biron.

Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to include any of these extensions to your trip.
