Discover Limburg, arguably the most bicycle-friendly region in Belgium, on an unforgettable bike trip from and to Genk. Well-maintained bike paths lead you through breathtaking scenery of forests, heaths and meadows, peppered with unique highlights: cycle through the middle of a pond, where you can experience life in and on the water up close, or ride through the treetops in Bosland. Another highlight awaits you in the Mechelse Heide, where a cycle path leads to an imposing wooden bridge that offers a breathtaking panoramic view. Limburg and cycling – a perfect combination!
Route
Easy tour in mainly flat terrain. Also suitable for people with little cycling experience. Some stages can be hilly or longer stretches of up to 70 km.
Individual arrival in Genk. Use the day to take a stroll through the city.
Your first day of cycling takes you across the Kempens Plateau and begins with a ride through the Mechelse Heide, one of the largest heath areas in Flanders. On a 300-meter-long wooden bridge, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view. Continue through the pine forests of the Hoge Kempen National Park and the Ophovenderheide. Opglabbeek and Meeuwen are good places for a coffee break. The destination for the day is Peer, a former town of the Principality of Liège, known for the Pieter Bruegel Museum.
Today you will experience a mix of history and nature. After the start, you will pass through Hechtel, a village destroyed during the Second World War. In Pijnven, the highlight ’Fietsen door de boom’ awaits you: a 700-meter-long cycle path over the treetops. In Leopoldsburg, you will follow in the footsteps of Operation Market Garden. Back in nature, you will cycle through the valley of the Zwarte Beek, home to rare bird species. Via old tram tracks, you will reach Houthalen, where relics of coal mining remind you of the industrial past.
After leaving Houthalen, the route leads through the Wijers, the “land of 1001 ponds”, a network of nature reserves with unique flora and fauna. After crossing the Prince Albert Canal, you will cycle through idyllic villages. A picnic in the countryside or lunch in Alken is an ideal option. Heading south through the gently sloping Limburg landscape, meadows, orchards, forests and rivers alternate. Finally, you will reach Tongeren, Belgium’s oldest city, rich in relics from the Gallo-Roman period.
Today your route takes you through the idyllic Jekerdal. The river Jeker accompanies you past the famous Fort Eben-Emael to Kanne, where you can explore the fascinating Kanne Caves. Shortly afterwards, you cross the border into the Netherlands and pass the magnificent Château Neercanne. From Muizenberg you leave the Jekerdal and cycle on to the day’s destination. The end of the day is marked by a special highlight: the impressive castle domain of Alden Biezen.
After a few kilometers you will reach Bilzen, where a short walk and a leisurely coffee break are worthwhile. Continue to Hasselt, the Belgian fashion and gin city, which will delight you with its urban charm. The route takes you through picturesque nature reserves to another highlight: “Fietsen door water”. On a 200-meter-long bike path, you will cycle through the middle of a pond in the De Wijers area. Optionally, you can end the day with a visit to the Bokrijk open-air museum.
