This 10-day cycle tour from Passau to Budapest is more than just a sporting challenge - it is a unique adventure that connects the most beautiful corners of Central Europe. Let yourself be enchanted by the combination of sporting activity, cultural discoveries and scenic beauty and experience an unforgettable journey. Start your tour in the historic three-river city of Passau, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet. Your adventure begins here when you get on your bike and follow the picturesque Danube cycle path.
Along the way, you will discover historical treasures and cultural highlights: from the imposing Schlögener Schlinge, where the Danube winds spectacularly, to the cultural city of Linz and Vienna with its imperial palaces. Each city along the route tells its own story and invites you to explore. But it’s not just the historical and cultural sights that make this trip so special. The culinary delights are also a highlight. Enjoy traditional Bavarian delicacies, Austrian specialties and Hungarian delicacies. Another highlight of your trip is the crossing of the Pannonian Plain, where untouched nature and vast fields offer a welcome change. Finally, you reach Budapest, the pearl on the Danube, with its world-famous thermal baths, impressive Danube promenade and lively city life.
Route
The tour is mostly flat and only sometimes slightly hilly. The Austrian section follows well-maintained and equipped cycle paths, in Hungary you will often cycle on country back and side roads. Upon entering and leaving cities there can of course be traffic that must be closely observed! The cycle lags are designed for an athletic riding style and can sometimes reach 90 km or more.
Individual arrival. Use the remaining time for a city tour or simply go for a walk through the picturesque old part of the “City of Three Rivers”. Until 4 pm bike hand over – for late arrivals on the next morning.
Along the riverbank of the Danube, you will cycle towards the Schlögener loop. The hard granite mountains of the Mühlviertel have forced the Danube into a 180-degree bend. Upon arrival you will then take the ferry across the Danube to the southern bank (not included) where you will cycle through the scenic Danube market, Aschach. Lastly, reaching today’s destination of rest in Brandstatt.
Today’s stretch leads you through the state capital of Upper-Austria, Linz, with its numerous attractions. Subsequently, you cycle through Strudengau. In Grein you can visit an impressive castle and the oldest city theatre in Austria.
Next, you leave the quaint baroque village and cycle through Nibelungengau to Pöchlarn, where you can find the significant monument Nibelungen and the birthplace of the renounced artist Oskar Kokoschka. After riding past the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, the rolling hills and vineyards of the Wachau take you through the romantic vineyards of Spitz, Weissenkirchen and ruins in the gorgeous village of Dürnstein. There you can visit the jail in which King Richard the Lionheart was arrested. Moving on to another highlight of the day, the 1000 year-old wine city of Krems is where you can enjoy a night of rest.
The last cycling day takes you through the vast and beautiful Tullner fields. As soon as you can see the edge of the Vienna Woods (Wiener Wald) and its rolling foothills, you will find the castle of Greifenstein and the sharply pointed spires of the Klosterneuburg monastery. Just after Klosterneuburg, you have reached the Austrian capital city and city of Waltz, Vienna, a metropolis with a heart full of charm! Rental eBikes will be changed at the hotel in Vienna.
The Donauauen National Park begins just outside Vienna and is an idyllic landscape with a variety of flora and fauna. Passing Orth Castle and Eckartsau Castle, you reach the spa town of Bad Deutsch Altenburg, where the Romans left their mark. The Slovakian capital Bratislava enchants with its dreamy old town and numerous magnificent buildings. The castle towers high above the Danube.
The Schüttinsel is a paradise for birds and fish. In the middle of this untouched landscape with small islands you will find dreamy farming villages and a labyrinth of Danube side arms. Your destination for the day is the city of Györ, situated at the mouth of 3 rivers. The city enchants with its baroque old town.
The stage first takes you through gently undulating farmland back to the Danube in the divided town of Komarom, King Matthias’ favorite town. You cycle along the Slovakian bank of the Danube on embankment paths and low-traffic side roads through small farming villages. You pass the Roman fort of Kelemantia on the way to the episcopal and royal city of Esztergom, whose basilica, the largest church in Hungary, is a glittering highlight of this tour.
Recommendation: Take the comfortable train between Györ and Komarno. Train tickets are available from ticket machines at the station and cost around € 1 per journey. This shortens the cycling stage to a total of approx. 52 km.
The hilly landscape of the Danube Bend will also enchant you. You cycle through small, idyllic villages, discover the small artists’ town of Szentendre with its nearby farm museum and enjoy a fantastic view of Budapest’s most famous sights as you cycle in.
The morning is at leisure. The train connections from Budapest are very good (to Vienna every hour, journey time approx. 3 hours), buses also stop at Vienna Airport.
