Alternative tour by bike+boat: Danube Impressions Passau - Vienna - Passau
Route
The path is completely paved from one end to the other, flat, almost always directly along the riverbank and is also very suitable for beginners and children.
Individual arrival. Use the remaining time for a city tour or go for a walk through the picturesque old part of the “City of Three Rivers”.
Pick up of rental bikes in Passau starting from 09:00 a.m.Starting in Passau, the Danube flows through the densely forested slopes of the narrow valley in the “Bavarian Forest” until it reaches the gorgeous Danube Loop in Schlögen. Here we recommend a walk up to the famous „Schlögener Blick“. From there you have a fantastic view over this fascinating region.
You cycle leisurely along the Danube through small, charming villages until you arrive in Aschach. The cycle path along this section is known for its relaxed atmosphere and offers fantastic panoramic views of the Danube and the surrounding hills. In Aschach, the riverside promenade invites you to relax.
The highlight of today’s ride is the Upper Austrian capital of Linz with its numerous attractions. In the morning you cycle to Ottensheim. There you board the train to the provincial capital. After a tour of the enchanting old town, you cycle on to Enns, the oldest town in Austria. Numerous imposing square courtyards are now on your way. In Mitterkirchen you have the opportunity to visit the exciting prehistoric open-air museum.
Let the fascinating landscape of the Strudengau take you back to times long past. The narrow stretches of the Danube were once feared by skippers because of their “whirlpools” and “eddies”. Grein, with the oldest town theater in Austria and the Maritime Museum, is certainly worth a visit.
Today you reach the Wachau - a centuries-old winegrowing culture has turned its wine terraces on steep southern slopes into “stairways to heaven” and given this valley its typical shape. Don’t miss out on a little wine tasting at one of the many winegrowers. From the Aggstein ruins you have a wonderful view of the little jewels of the Wachau
You reach the world-famous Dürnstein through the vineyards of the Wachau. A short but steep climb (by foot) to the ruins is worthwhile and is rewarded with a magnificent view over the Wachau. Now it is only a short distance to Krems. Leave the unique cultural landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau by train and immerse yourself in the waltzing city of Vienna.
Some say that one must personally and even intensively experience this great city. A few of the must-sees include the famous “Naschmarkt”, the City Opera, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and of course the gorgeous imperial castle Schönbrunn. Extension at Vienna or train ride back to Passau (Season 1+2) or comfortably by bus (season 3).
