Whilst travelling along the cycle paths you will get to know all about this little country, its flair and specialities. The unspoilt nature with its roaring rivers, the mountains and lakes with its legends, customs, and a culture of a country influenced by history, and the South Tyrolean hospitality with its specialities and excellent wines.
Route
An easy tour for everyone! In the last few years, the bike paths in the valleys have been reconstructed and in some cases, newly built. Although South Tyrol is better known for its mountains you can also find easy bike paths in the valleys without great differences of altitude. This tour is suitable also for families with children (should have a good stamina) from the age of 14.
In the morning, you will head to the Alta Pusteria Valley. Bikes will be handed out in Dobbiaco. Today, you will cycle along the well-developed Alta Pusteria Cycle Path along the Rienz River. The bike tour begins in the heart of the Dolomites in Dobbiaco and takes you past the famous Braies Valley, which stretches southward. Passing the Olang reservoir and following the Rienz River, you reach the Michael Pacher town of Brunico. Continuing leisurely through the lower Puster Valley, the tour leads through the ruins of the Mühlbach Hermitage into the Eisack Valley. Shortly before Bressanone, you can visit the Neustift monastery complex.
The Eisacktal Cycle Path from Bressanone to Bolzano along the Eisack River sets the direction for today. The starting point is the bishopric town of Bressanone, which you leave heading south. Soon, the picturesque town of Klausen with its narrow streets and houses invites you to take a first look around. Finally, South Tyrol’s capital Bolzano awaits you, the city where two cultures meet.
Today, a bike tour through South Tyrol’s most famous wine-growing region and around Lake Kaltern is on the agenda. Passing Sigmundskron Castle, you will first cycle to Eppan, the largest wine-growing municipality in South Tyrol. You will then continue on your way to Kaltern. If you wish, you can make a short detour to the idyllic Lake Montiggler near St. Michael and take a refreshing dip. The municipality of Kaltern is definitely worth a visit, as is the South Tyrolean Wine Museum. Shortly after Kaltern, Lake Kaltern awaits you before you cycle back to Bolzano along the Etsch Cycle Path.
Along the “Wine Road,” you will cross South Tyrol’s largest fruit-growing region, where orchards stretch as far as the eye can see—this is where the famous South Tyrolean apples come from. South Tyrol’s oldest winery in Andrian is also located along the route. The route continues via Terlan and Nals to the municipality of Lana, which is definitely worth a visit before you reach the spa town of Merano. The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, located just above Merano, are also worth seeing. Alternatively, you can cycle directly to Merano along the Etschradweg (Etsch Cycle Path) along the dam.
Today, you will cycle along the cycle path of the same name into the Passeier Valley. You can enjoy the view of South Tyrol with its rivers and magnificent mountains one last time before returning to Merano for your last night.
Return transfer to Brixen (included when no extra nights in Merano are booked), individual departure or option to extend your South Tyrol vacation.
