Explore all the beauty of Friuli-Venezia Giulia on this diverse cycling tour – from the vineyards and art cities inland to the lagoons and beaches on the Adriatic Sea. Your tour starts and ends in Udine, the cultural heart of the region. You will cycle through charming towns such as Spilimbergo with its famous mosaic school, elegant Pordenone, and historic Aquileia with its Roman roots. On the Adriatic coast, you can look forward to the lagoon town of Marano Lagunare, the sunny island of Grado, and – optionally – a detour to the port city of Trieste. Through rolling hills, fertile plains, and traditional villages, the route finally takes you back to Udine via Gradisca d’Isonzo. An enjoyable round trip full of culture, nature, and Italian lifestyle!
Route
The route mainly runs along well-maintained bike paths and side roads with little traffic.
Individual arrival in Udine. Enjoy a glass of wine while strolling through the city and get in the mood for your vacation!
Along the route, you will encounter the Tagliamento, Friuli’s most important river, for the first time today. After crossing it, you will continue cycling towards Lake Cornino. The lake is located in the nature reserve of the same name, where you can admire griffon vultures. From Lake Cornino, you will reach Spilimbergo, the “city of mosaics,” with its school where students from all over the world learn this ancient art.
Today, you leave the city of mosaics behind and cycle towards Pordenone. This city on the Novello River is known as the birthplace of Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, the famous Renaissance painter, and has been chosen as the cultural capital for 2027.
You cycle south until you reach the Tagliamento again. Once you arrive in Marano, you take a boat and, after arriving, you cycle the last few kilometers to Aquileia. The basilica of Roman origin, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth seeing.
Today you leave Aquileia and cycle along the lagoon towards the Julian coast. Passing through small villages, you reach the Monfalcone area until you arrive at the small town of Sistiana. Along the way, we recommend a stop at the Isonzo Estuary Nature Reserve and Duino Castle.
Sistiana is known for its bay with pebble beaches. Today you have two options: relax under the sun or take a bike trip to Trieste. You can reach the regional capital by cycling along the coastal road. Once you arrive in the city, you can visit the center or continue along the Cottur cycle path, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city’s gulf.
After leaving Sistiana, you begin your return journey to Udine. Today you cycle through the Collio Goriziano with its vineyards. On the way, you pass through the towns of Gradisca d’Isonzo and Cormons, where we recommend taking a break to taste the famous wines of Collio.
