Biketour through northern Italy’s lake district

Lake Garda, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore

Itinerary

Route

The route includes some climbs that require a minimum level of fitness, and although it mainly follows bike paths and side roads, there are also sections with heavy traffic. This tour is not recommended for children under 14 years of age!

Individual arrival at Lake Garda. The historic fortified town of Peschiera del Garda, completely surrounded by the Mincio River, impresses with its mighty 16th-century fortifications: a pentagonal rampart with picturesque bastions and imposing city gates, an architectural gem and the perfect starting point for your trip.

Today, you have a choice of two routes: the longer, quieter, and hillier option first takes you along the beautiful Mincio cycle path and then via San Martino della Battaglia, where a tall tower commemorates the Italian wars of independence. The shorter route runs closer to Lake Garda and takes you via Desenzano to Sirmione – one of the most enchanting places on the entire lake. The destination for the day is Brescia, rich in Roman and medieval history and dominated by the historic Castello.

A short, relaxed day of cycling takes you through the beautiful Franciacorta wine region, famous for its high-quality sparkling wines. You cycle to Rodengo Saiano with its Benedictine abbey, where monks still live today, pass the castles of Passirano and Clusane, and finally reach the Sebino Nature Reserve – a refuge for numerous water birds. In the afternoon, you will arrive at the shores of idyllic Lake Iseo.

You cycle leisurely southward along the Oglio River, which originates at Lake Iseo. After a short time, you reach Grumello del Monte, a pretty village with old stone houses. Behind a small bridge, the medieval town of Montello opens up – a real gem made of stone. Your destination for the day is Bergamo, the “Pearl of Northern Italy.” You will arrive early enough to explore both the elegant lower town and the picturesque upper town, which you can easily reach by funicular.

Today, the route takes you to the eastern arm of Lake Como, Lago di Lecco. You will first cycle to Mapello with its sanctuary of the Madonna di Prada and then on to Sotto il Monte – the birthplace of Pope John XXIII, whose birthplace is now a small, freely accessible museum. A special experience awaits you as you cross the River Adda on a “Leonardo ferry,” which is pulled by a rope without the use of a motor. The cycle path then leads through lush greenery along the Adda to Garlate.

Today you will pass several small lakes: Annone, Pusiano, and Alserio – partly on pretty nature trails. The last section is one of the most beautiful of the entire trip: in Solzago, the Passeggiata Voltiana, named after Alessandro Volta, begins. A lively descent through the forest and then along a beautiful road takes you directly to Como and the shores of this famous lake.

Your final stage first takes you along Lake Como, past magnificent villas such as the elegant Villa Olmo. Via Cernobbio, you reach the Swiss border and continue cycling to Varese and its lake of the same name, which has a beautiful cycle path. You then follow the clear Lake Monate, which is even inviting for a swim on warm days. Via Ispra, you finally reach Lake Maggiore and roll comfortably along the green Quassa cycle path to Ranco – a place with a fantastic view over the lake.
