Rhine Roundtrip from/to Cologne

explore the Rhineland area

Itinerary

Route

The route runs almost exclusively on paved and paved bike and dam paths or on quiet country roads. Direct driving in traffic rarely occurs. Only on the routes away from the rivers are there occasional small climbs to overcome.

Individual arrival in Cologne. Arrive early (we will be happy to help you book additional nights) – the famous Cologne Cathedral and the beautiful old town are well worth a visit!

Your tour starts in Cologne’s green belt and takes you past the Aachener Weiher and the Lindenthal canals into the city’s leafy outskirts. Discover the Cologne Forest Laboratory and the recultivated Ville forests, as well as Marienfeld, where World Youth Day took place in 2005. You will continue cycling to the Erft with its floodplain landscapes and to Mödrath Castle near Kerpen. A detour

Today you cycle along the Erft, past Frimmersdorf and into the local recreation area of Grevenbroich. Culture awaits you at the Museum Insel Hombroich and the Clemens-Sels-Museum. The beautiful Erftweg offers a 7 km detour to the Langwaden Monastery and Hülchrath Castle. After crossing the Rhine, it will take you to the Düsseldorf Rhine promenade and the old town. Enjoy the evening with a glass of Altbier and a view of the Rhine!

After breakfast, you will cycle through the lively town of Neuss and follow the Rhine Cycle Path on the left bank of the Rhine to Cologne. On the way, the Zonser Grind nature reserve and the Tannenbusch near Dormagen invite you to take a break in nature. From Knechtsteden Abbey, the route leads via medieval Zons towards Cologne, whose cathedral spires point the way from afar. In the evening, a variety of regional specialties await you in Cologne’s breweries – from heaven and earth to Rhenish sauerbraten.

Today you will cycle along the Rhine to Bonn, the former capital of Germany. Visit historic sites such as the Schaumburg Palace and enjoy the cultural flair of Beethoven’s city. In the afternoon, you can experience the Rhine landscape from the water on a relaxing boat trip back to Cologne.

Today you will cycle along the “Erlebnisroute Süd” to Brühl. The UNESCO World Heritage castles of Brühl entice you with their picturesque castle gardens, and for art lovers there is a visit to the Max Ernst Museum. The Phantasialand amusement park, with its exciting water rides and roller coasters, is also worth a visit before you take the train back to Cologne. If you prefer, you can also cycle back.
