Lake Constance - Lake Königssee | 12 days

relaxed cycling through Bavaria’s jewels

Itinerary

Route

Continuous signage. Route mostly on quiet paved country roads, rarely on bike paths and agricultural roads. Near large cities on bike paths alongside roads. Hilly Alpine foothills with gentle and steep inclines.

Individual arrival in Lindau. You will love the old town with its narrow streets and the famous harbor with its lighthouse.

You say goodbye to Lake Constance, the “Swabian Sea,” and cycle into the gently rolling hills of the Allgäu region. The impressive panorama of the Allgäu Alps accompanies you to the charming spa town of Oberstaufen.

The Großer Alpsee lake is perfect for swimming and leisurely walks along the shore. In Immenstadt, you can explore the historic old town before cycling on to Sonthofen, Germany’s southernmost town. The route then takes you along the Rottachsee lake and through the Primavera nature reserve to Nesselwang.

With views of castle ruins, you cycle to Hopfen am See. In Füssen, the old town charms visitors with its medieval alleys and Baroque churches. The magnificent royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are well worth a visit.

Passing Lake Bannwald, you will ride to the Wieskirche church in Steingaden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Rococo gem. The route continues through picturesque countryside to idyllic Bad Kohlgrub, the highest moorland spa resort with farmhouses and Lüftlmalerei frescoes.

The route descends to Grafenaschau and the Murnauer and Eschenloher Moos nature reserve. With views of the Ammergau Alps and the Zugspitze, you cycle past the Schwaiganger stud farm. Franz Marc found inspiration at Lake Kochel, which you can see in the Franz Marc Museum.

The striking onion domes of St. Benedict’s Basilica in Benediktbeuern can be seen from afar. Bad Heilbrunn, with its Art Nouveau villa, is synonymous with spa tradition. Bad Tölz on the Isar and Moor inspired the famous writer Thomas Mann. From Kalvarienberg, you have a magnificent view over the Isar Valley.

In Gmund, you can enjoy the fairytale view over Lake Tegernsee before continuing on to Lake Schliersee – surrounded by mountains and Bavarian hospitality. In Neuhaus, the open-air museum of former ski racer Markus Wasmeier invites you on an exciting journey through time.

Neubeuern lies at the entrance to the Inn Valley, enclosed by gates and guarded by the castle. Enjoy shady beer gardens and the historic backdrop before continuing on to your destination for the day at a leisurely pace.

The old Salinenradweg cycle path takes you to the Bergen Moor. In Siegsdorf, you can visit the Natural History and Mammoth Museum. Following the Traun river, you will reach Traunstein with its magnificent town houses, evidence of the salt trade.

Gentle hills, rural traditions, and views of the Berchtesgaden Alps characterize the Rupertiwinkel region. Particularly worth seeing are Höglwörth Abbey on its island in the lake of the same name and the historic Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall. A detour to Königssee with its world-famous pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä is the perfect way to round off your trip.
