Experience the southern Black Forest at its most beautiful: between the source rivers of the Danube, the majestic Feldberg, and the sunny university town of Freiburg, you will discover nature, culture, and cuisine in a unique way. Away from the tourist routes, you will cycle along small paths to real Black Forest treasures – from the idyllic Simonswald Valley to Schluchsee and the famous Titisee. Whether it’s relaxed panoramic rides, fascinating views from the Schauinsland or cozy evenings in quaint villages: this cycling tour in the southern Black Forest combines exercise, relaxation and the incomparable atmosphere of one of Germany’s most beautiful regions.
Route
An electric bike is ideal for exploring the beautiful landscape of the southern Black Forest from the saddle of your bike. The trip is also possible with a normal bike, but you will need to be in reasonably good physical condition. There are shorter and longer inclines almost every day. The biggest differences in altitude are bridged with the help of trains and cable cars, which take you and your bike to the top. The routes run on paved bike paths, small country roads, and forest trails.
Welcome to the oldest city in Baden-Württemberg! Rottweil offers exciting contrasts between historic town houses and modern architecture. Traditional festivals such as Fasnet meet contemporary art and the famous jazz festival here. One highlight is the 246-meter-high thyssenkrupp Test Tower – from Germany’s highest visitor platform, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city and the Black Forest.
Your bike tour through the southern Black Forest begins on quiet paths between open landscapes and tranquil forests. Only a few villages line the route. It is worth making a detour to the source of the Brigach, which together with the Breg in Donaueschingen forms the young Danube. The destination for the day is the health resort of Schönwald, known as the birthplace of the Black Forest cuckoo clock.
Before you set off, it’s worth taking a look at the Adlerschanzen, where young ski jumpers train. Then cycle over two gentle inclines to the source of the Breg river and enjoy a long descent into the Simonswald valley. Passing Gutach and Elz, you will reach Freiburg, Germany’s sunniest city. Explore the old town with its narrow streets and streams, as well as the lively atmosphere of this university city.
Today you will experience the Black Forest panorama in all its glory! The Schauinslandbahn cable car, Germany’s longest, will take you and your bike to an altitude of over 1,200 meters. From there, it’s a quick ride to the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest. Then it’s a rapid descent on car-free paths to Schluchsee, the largest lake in the Black Forest. You’ll roll leisurely along the southern shore to the town of the same name.
After one last look at Schluchsee, a long descent leads through the idyllic Steinatal valley, where beavers have returned to their natural habitat. Passing through Bonndorf and following the Bähnle cycle path along a former railway line, you reach Neustadt. From here, it is only a few kilometers to Titisee or Hinterzarten.
Enjoy the day at Lake Titisee, surrounded by dense fir forest. Take a boat trip, stroll along the lake promenade, or relax in the bathing paradise with palm trees, pools, and saunas. Culture lovers can visit the Ski Museum or the Adlerschanze ski jump in Hinterzarten. If you like, you can cycle around the lake (approx. 12 km) or to the idyllic Feldsee lake (approx. 30 km).
Take the train up to Rötenbach, where the last stage of your journey begins. Cycle through open countryside and peaceful forests, past the Witterschneekreuz pilgrimage chapel to Lake Kirnberg – the perfect place for a swim. The route continues via Villingen and the Schwenninger Moos, the source of the Neckar, to Rottweil, the starting point of your journey.
