Experience the whole diversity of the German Baltic Sea coast on this varied cycling tour along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route – from the Danish border to the historic Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The route takes you from Flensburg via Kappeln, Eckernförde, and Schöneberger Strand to Heiligenhafen, continuing via Neustadt, Scharbeutz, and Timmendorfer Strand to Lübeck with its beautiful old town. From there, you will discover the Baltic Sea coast towards Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: charming seaside resorts such as Travemünde, Warnemünde, and the idyllic Fischland-Darß, interspersed with wide coastal landscapes, fine sandy beaches, and impressive Hanseatic cities with medieval brick Gothic architecture.
Enjoy the fresh sea air, maritime flair, and the feeling of boundless freedom on two wheels – this cycling tour is a must for all Baltic Sea and nature fans who want to combine coast, culture, and comfort.
Route
Flat to slightly hilly, few inclines, low endurance required; rather leisurely pace, sufficient time for sightseeing and breaks.
Day 1: Flensburg
Individual arrival in Germany’s northernmost city. Take a stroll through the charming streets of this fjord city.
Day 2: Flensburg – Kappeln, approx. 73 km
The journey takes you along the Flensburg Fjord to Glücksburg, home to one of Germany’s most beautiful moated castles. Continue cycling around Geltinger Bay through the tranquil village of Angeln to Kappeln.
Day 3: Kappeln – Eckernförde/surroundings, approx. 45 km
Don’t miss exploring pretty Kappeln before continuing your journey. Today’s route takes you past the burial mounds, the Baltic resort of Damp, and Ludwigsburg Manor House before you reach your destination for the day, Eckernförde.
Day 4: Eckernförde/surrounding area – Schönberg/surrounding area, approx. 62 km + ferry
Here you can still find the typical North German character. Take the fjord steamer from Friedrichsort to Laboe (included).
Day 5: Schönberg/surrounding area – Heiligenhafen/Großenbrode/Fehmarn, approx. 34-61 km
Pretty seaside resorts and wide beaches will enchant you on this stage. Leave Hohwacht Bay with its miles of sandy beach.
Day 6: Heiligenhafen/Großenbrode/Fehmarn – Neustadt/Timendorfer Strand, approx. 49-66 km
A short drive to Lübeck Bay, past Dahme and Kellenhusen, takes you to Grömitz. Grömitz is one of the oldest and largest Baltic Sea resorts. Continue south to the Holstein Baltic Sea town of Neustadt (Holst.).
Day 7: Neustadt/Timmendorfer Strand – Lübeck, approx. 46-49 km
Mostly along the beaches and beach promenades of Haffkrug, Scharbeutz, and Timmendorfer Strand to Travemünde. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming. Cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and shops line the beaches in a colorful succession. Continue inland to Lübeck.
Day 8: Lübeck
Individual departure or extension
Day 1: Lübeck
Individual arrival. The lively old town of Lübeck with its narrow streets, churches, and museums looks forward to your visit.
Day 2: Lübeck – Wismar, approx. 58-77 km
You leave Lübeck for Travemünde by train (on your own, -20 km) or bike. You take the ferry to Priwall on your own and cycle to the Baltic resort of Boltenhagen. The journey continues to Wismar Bay in the old Hanseatic city.
Day 3: Wismar – Kühlungsborn/Umg, approx. 32-61 km
A trip to the island of Poel? No problem, because this island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Shortly before Kühlungsborn, you will pass through Bastorf. Climb the lighthouse and enjoy the breathtaking view over the Baltic Sea. On a clear day, you can even see the island of Fehmarn.
Day 4: Kühlungsborn/Umg. – Warnemünde/Rostock, approx. 21-56 km
The highlights of today’s stage are Heiligendamm, Germany’s oldest seaside resort, and Doberan Minster. The Ghost Forest on the steep banks of Nienhagen is a particularly scenic experience.
Day 5: Rostock/Warnemünde – Fischland, approx. 17-62 km + ferry
Take the Warnow ferry (included) to Hohe Düne. If you want to learn everything there is to know about amber, then a visit to the Amber Museum in Ribnitz Damgarten is well worth it. Nearby is a show apiary where everything revolves around honey. Once you’ve seen it all, cycle back to the Baltic Sea to your hotel on Fischland or stay directly in Ribnitz Damgarten at your booked hotel.
Day 6: Fischland – Darß, approx. 30-65 km
Experience the fascination of the Baltic Sea. You will cross part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. Overnight stay in Prerow, Zingst, or Barth.
Day 7: Darß – Stralsund, approx. 42-57 km
From the small Bodden and Vinetastadt Barth, your journey takes you along the Bodden coast to the Strelasund. In Stralsund, the OZEANEUM (on your own) and St. Mary’s Church await you.
