Bavarian Highlights 9 days

Wonderful nature and tradition

Itinerary

Route

You cycle on well-signposted and paved cycle paths (Isar-, Lake of Constance King’s sea and Via Bavarica Tyrolensis-cycle path) as well as on quiet side roads (only on short sections on main roads) and a few unpaved but well passable distances. A few short climbs can easily be managed pushing.

Individual arrival in Munich.

Your bike tour takes you to Lake Ammersee. Enjoy the lake view in Herrsching, then continue on to Andechs Monastery (e-bike recommended). Alternatively, a leisurely route takes you through the Würm Valley to Starnberg (approx. 15 miles). Lake Starnberg offers a magnificent view of the Zugspitze.

You will reach Berg along the eastern side of Lake Starnberg. Near the votive chapel, a cross marks the spot where Bavaria’s King Ludwig II died. Shortly before Seeshaupt, a beer garden and bathing beach invite you to stop for a break. Murnau and Seehausen am Staffelsee are picturesquely situated in the Blue Land.

In the morning, you cycle through the Murnauer Moos, the largest Alpine edge moor in Central Europe. Then you follow the clear Loisach river to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You will be enchanted by the nature, mountains, and panoramic views.

The short stage allows you to visit the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest point (just under 3,000 m), with a 360° panorama of around 400 peaks. In the afternoon, the beautiful Barmsee lake with its sunbathing lawn and mountain views invites you to relax.

Between Wallgau and the Sylvenstein Reservoir, the Isar spreads out to become Germany’s last wild river, forming a unique landscape. Like a fjord, the Sylvensteinsee lies between the mountains, and the crystal-clear lake invites you to take a dip before cycling via Lenggries to Bad Tölz.

A short bike ride takes you to Lake Tegernsee. Stop off at the Bräustüberl Tegernsee, where Benedictine monks built a monastery and brewery 1,260 years ago. The extra 20 km for a picturesque tour around Lake Tegernsee are definitely worth it!

Through the Mangfall Valley, you will reach Reisach Castle, an extraordinary building that supplies Munich with water. Gravel banks and turquoise-green pools invite you to take a refreshing dip before you arrive in Munich.

It was a wonderful trip with perfect weather and perfect scenery.  Garmish and Mittenwald in particular were our favourite places ... J.S. 07/22
