Experience one of the most impressive Alpine crossings on two wheels, from Lake Chiemsee to the Adriatic Sea! This varied cycling tour on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route takes you away from the well-known transit routes from Bavaria via Tyrol and Carinthia to sunny Italy. Between snow-capped peaks, clear lakes, and Mediterranean plains, you will discover the whole diversity of the Alpine regions.
From the “Bavarian Sea,” you will cycle leisurely via St. Johann in Tirol and Zell am See, continuing through the Drau Valley to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In charming towns such as Venzone or Spilimbergo, you will encounter history, Italian lifestyle, and culinary delights. Finally, you will reach Lignano, where your Alpine crossing ends with a dip in the sea.
Route
The route mainly follows well-maintained cycle paths and quiet side roads. The most challenging sections are covered by transfer. The cycle tour is suitable for young people aged 16 and over.
Individual arrival at the starting hotel on Lake Chiemsee.
Lake Chiemsee, also known as the “Bavarian Sea,” is the largest lake in Bavaria and famous for its natural scenery, water sports, and cultural offerings. The route leads from the picturesque lake through the Chiemgau region towards the south, past Walchsee and Gasteig to the baroque town of St. Johann in Tirol, the lively heart of the region between the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Wilder Kaiser.
Hochfilzen is the first interesting stop on today’s stage. The town is likely to be familiar to every biathlon fan, as World Cup races are held here every year in front of thousands of spectators. The route continues to Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, the third-largest town in the province of Salzburg with its typical Austrian town center. The stage destination is Zell am See, located on a peninsula on the shores of Lake Zell, in the immediate vicinity of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier.
On the Tauern Cycle Path, you cycle leisurely towards Mittersill. The Tauern Cycle Path is considered a paradise for cyclists of all ages. To the south, the imposing peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountains greet you. A transfer takes you to the heart of the national park, before you roll mostly downhill from the Matreier Tauernhaus to Matrei in East Tyrol.
The cycle path leads through the idyllic Isel Valley to the sunny town of Lienz in the very south of Austria, near the border with Italy. The atmosphere here is Mediterranean, and the Italian “dolce vita” is already being lived. The Drau Cycle Path takes you from Lienz to Oberdrauburg. If you stay overnight in Kötsch-Mauthen, a transfer over the Gailberg Pass is included.
In the morning, a transfer takes you to the Plöcken Pass, the border with Italy. You then race down to Paluzza on numerous serpentine bends. Passing the thermal baths of Arta and the Roman archaeological sites of Zuglio, you will reach the medieval town of Venzone via Tolmezzo, which had to be rebuilt after a devastating earthquake and is a member of the “borghi più belli d’Italia” (most beautiful places in Italy).
Today you start in Tolmezzo and follow the cycle path towards Cavazzo Carnico and Pioverno. In Pioverno, you can choose whether to cross the bridge over the Tagliamento to visit Venzone, famous for its medieval architecture. The main route continues to Bordano, Trasaghis, picturesque Lago Cornino, Flagogna, and Pinzano. Lago Cornino, with its turquoise waters and surrounding nature, is a true oasis of beauty. In Pinzano, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Tagliamento. Finally, you will reach Spilimbergo, the city of mosaics, with its School of Friulian Mosaicists and charming historic center.
You have long since left all the strenuous climbs behind you. With the Tagliamento River as your constant companion, you cycle inexorably through the Friulian countryside towards the sea. The river was the scene of relentless fighting during World War I and flows into the Adriatic Sea at Lignano, where you can end your journey on the endless sandy beaches.
